Charles Creed had an eye for contrasting fabrics. His work as a fashion designer now inspires Iris Debonair, a new Eau de Parfum built around English lavender and French iris pallida.
A fifth-generation member of the Creed family, Charles challenged convention through sportswear and tailored suits for women. His approach gives the house a starting point for exploring the relationship between personal style and fragrance. In Iris Debonair, the precision of British tailoring finds a counterpart in French haute perfumery, with contrasting ingredients taking the place of contrasting fabrics. Creed describes the composition as a universal fougère floral, bringing together fragrance families traditionally associated with masculinity and femininity. The intention is to move beyond those distinctions and leave room for the wearer’s own taste.
The opening, though, belongs to bergamot. Sourced from Calabria and co-infused with absinthe leaves in a pairing exclusive to Creed, it introduces the bright, bitter freshness of the fragrance. Pink pepper and cardamom complete the top notes.
English lavender follows at the heart, accompanied by violet leaf and a fig pulp accord. For this ingredient, Creed turns to Kent, where the cool, humid climate allows its chosen Maillette variety to develop slowly. The house describes the resulting profile as fresher and less camphorous than Provençal lavender. There is care in the timing, too. Harvested between July and August, the freshly cut flowers are steam-distilled on the farm soon afterwards, preserving their aromatic purity and cool tones.
The iris requires a different kind of patience. In Les Landes, France, its roots grow beneath the soil for three years before harvesting.
It is the root, rather than the petals, that supplies the fragrant material. Harvested in November, it undergoes a preparation process and hydro-distillation to produce iris butter, bringing earthy, powdery and velvety facets to Iris Debonair’s base. Ambrette and amberwood complete this part of the composition. Behind the ingredient is a family farming story. “My father and uncle took over my grandfather’s farm in 1985, the same year I was born,” explains Arnauld, an iris grower in Les Landes featured by Creed. He now runs the farm independently, drawing on the knowledge passed down to him as he continues to cultivate iris pallida.
The care involved in those early stages is part of Creed’s Art of Millésime, which follows the raw ingredients from harvesting to master blending at the house’s facilities in France. It also makes the parallel with tailoring more tangible. Before either a garment or a fragrance takes shape, choices about materials have already begun to determine its character.
The reference to Charles Creed returns in the bottle. Light grey glass is paired with a tactile black leather-textured sleeve and an iris-grey, semi-glossy label, bringing his interest in contrasting surfaces into the design. Presented in 50ml and 100ml Eau de Parfum formats, Iris Debonair carries its tailoring influence through to the finishing touches, connecting the scent with the object that holds it.
