Limassol Marina highlights the twin transition challenges and opportunities for Cyprus Marinas

Limassol Marina highlights the twin transition challenges and opportunities for Cyprus Marinas image

Date

7th October 2026

As part of the European PortAbility project, Limassol Marina’s General Manager, Nikiforos Pampakas, shared insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the marina sector in Cyprus, with a particular focus on the green and digital transition.

The presentation formed part of the PortAbility partners’ meeting, taking place in Limassol from 6 to 9 October 2026. The European project focuses on developing skills and strengthening education and training for the workforce operating in ports and related maritime infrastructure, including marinas, bringing together 23 organisations from across Europe.

During the presentation, Mr Pampakas highlighted the importance of the twin transition and how sustainability and digitalisation are increasingly shaping the future of marina operations. He also emphasised the importance of developing the skills needed to support this transformation and adapt to the changing demands of the sector.

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important part of marina development and day-to-day operations. The presentation highlighted a number of initiatives at Limassol Marina that support the green transition, including shore power, renewable and solar energy, geothermal energy, water management, surface-runoff filtration, integrated waste management, Seaflex mooring systems, environmental monitoring and EV charging infrastructure.

Together, these solutions demonstrate how sustainability can be integrated across different aspects of marina operations, from energy and water management to waste, mobility and environmental protection.

Digitalisation is also transforming the way marinas operate and engage with their customers. Smart technologies, including Marina Master, support operational efficiency, while digital monitoring and environmental data provide valuable information for decision-making and performance management.

The presentation also highlighted the growing importance of the digital customer experience, with technology creating new opportunities to enhance communication, services and engagement.

Through its participation in PortAbility, Limassol Marina is contributing its experience to the wider European discussion on the future of marinas and the skills required to support their evolution.

The twin transition is ultimately about more than technology and infrastructure. It is about creating more sustainable and efficient marinas while equipping people with the knowledge and skills to support their continued development. As the sector evolves, collaboration, innovation and investment in people will be key to shaping a resilient and future-ready marina industry in Cyprus.
